Argentomagus museum has been
constructed on part of a
Gallo-Roman town. The remains
have been integrated into
a modern building of 2,400m2;
at the heart of an archaeological
crypt.
Your visit is essentially
an invitation to discover
the archaeological heritage
of the Creuse valley and
trace its journey from the
first signs of human occupation
on the high banks of the
Creuse to the last local
accounts of the Gallo-Roman
period at the end of the
4th century A.D.
Very Early Palaeolithic:
Lavaud (Eguzon). Outdoor
site (800,000 - 1 million
years ago). Quartz workings.
Early to Middle Palaeolithic
(Indre):
Stone workings (surface digging
- discs, scrapers, bifaces)
Upper Palaeolithic:
Conives (Thenay): palaeontological
deposits (approx. 30,000
yrs. old). Wildlife consisting
of bison, reindeer, deer,
hyena and rhinoceros.
Fressignes (Eguzon). Outdoor
site, late Solutrean (approx.
18,000 yrs. old). Stone workings
with flint and quartz.
Abri Fritsch (Pouligny-Saint-Pierre).
Shelter, late Solutrean and
Badegoulian (approx. 18,000
- 16,000 yrs. old). Stone
