    What subjects are covered by the permanent collections?
    Argentomagus museum has been constructed on part of a Gallo-Roman town. The remains have been integrated into a modern building of 2,400m2; at the heart of an archaeological crypt.

    Your visit is essentially an invitation to discover the archaeological heritage of the Creuse valley and trace its journey from the first signs of human occupation on the high banks of the Creuse to the last local accounts of the Gallo-Roman period at the end of the 4th century A.D.

    Very Early Palaeolithic:
    Lavaud (Eguzon). Outdoor site (800,000 - 1 million years ago). Quartz workings.

    Early to Middle Palaeolithic (Indre):
    Stone workings (surface digging - discs, scrapers, bifaces)

    Upper Palaeolithic:
    Conives (Thenay): palaeontological deposits (approx. 30,000 yrs. old). Wildlife consisting of bison, reindeer, deer, hyena and rhinoceros.
    Fressignes (Eguzon). Outdoor site, late Solutrean (approx. 18,000 yrs. old). Stone workings with flint and quartz.
    Abri Fritsch (Pouligny-Saint-Pierre). Shelter, late Solutrean and Badegoulian (approx. 18,000 - 16,000 yrs. old). Stone and bone workings, cave art, clothing, wildlife.
    La Garenne (Saint-Marcel): Shelter and grotto, middle Magdalenian (approx. 14,000 yrs. old). Stone and bone workings, cave art, clothing, wildlife.
    Orville: Outdoor site, late Magdalenian (approx. 12,000 yrs. old). Stone workings.

    Mesolithic & Neolithic (Indre):
    Surface digging in the Berry. Donated by G.R. Simonnet, R. Albert, A. Rigaud
    Montbel VII (Heugnes): Outdoor site, middle Mesolithic. Stone workings.

    Bronze Age:
    Chabris deposits - les Isles
    Chéry-Malassis deposits

    Gallo-Roman:
    Argentomagus (Saint-Marcel): 1st century B.C. to the end of the 4th century A.D. Monumental fountain, the house of Quintus Sergius Macrinus, temples, remains beneath the museum, Virou theatre, necropolis (cemeteries of Champ de l'Image and Les Ripottes). Major collection of artefacts.

    Burial place (Mouhet)

    Coin Collections:
    Collection of Greek, Roman and Gaulish coins (Dr. Dupoux collection, treasure troves of Tendu and Oulches).
