We
can gain a huge insight into
domestic life and the work
of craftsman during the High
Empire from the many objects
discovered on the Argentomagus
site.
There are spatulas for putting
on make-up, counters for
games, bobbins, distaffs
and needle holders for weaving
and sewing. Items used for
writing include stylets and
seal boxes, capsules containing
attached to wax tablets on
which the imprint of a seal
has been applied.
A range of
dressing and costume accessories
have been unearthed: spring-loaded
fibulae of the indigenous
variety, hinged fibulae (of
which there are two very
rare examples in the shape
of a yoke and of a person),
intaglios, beads, parts of
a belt and even an ivory
fan.
Finds of terracotta lamps,
keys, pieces of harness,
pans, bronze moulds, a variety
of iron tools, pencils and
pigments preserved in bowls
can help build up a real
picture of the items craftsmen
were providing to satisfy
domestic needs.
